... South Africa : Big Five Horse Riding Safari, a unique experience...

Equestrian safaris are one of the most extreme experiences you can live on horseback. This picture says it all : a lion prepared for attack, his head rising like the sun above the grassland, and an incredibly quiet horse...This unforgetable meeting is due to the talent of a man, Philip, a great horseman able to bring 20 horses to this high confidence level. A specialist of African wildlife, he knows perfectly the behaviour of wild animals.These pictures have been taken in August 2004 during a trip in South Africa, both in our Big Five reserve and in Waterberg.     More information : our Big Five riding safaris programs.

Safari life - Philip, your guide - "Bush Camp"

Safari life...

During your first hours on horseback, you will be surprised by the high pace of this riding safari : 5 or 6 long canters per day, slaloming in the bush and sometimes galopping through a herd of impalas and wildebeests !In the path, as we had just seen lion racks, a cheetah crosses our way...

Other wild animals we have met during this riding safari : elephants and big male Kudu.

On the left picture, an elephant is charging us, that's why the photo is quite blurred ! On the right, a rhino who have been protected so early in the region that South Africa has been able to help other countries like Tanzania.

Giraffes, often with their calves, are one of the most touching meetings in the bush. They accept us to come close to them, keeping grazing.

Philip, your guide...

Philip settled in this reserve 6 years ago with his wife Gerti. They were dreaming of bringing this land back to wildlife, so they found an agreement with neighbouring lands in order to drop the fences between them and extend space dedicated to wildlife up to 8500 ha (21000 acres).
Six years later, this project is a great success since almost all soutafrican wildlife came back to the reserve. Some species have even been breeding so well that they had to remove part of the herds to restock other reserves (elephants, lions and wild dogs especially).
Philip is therefore preserving the balance of the ecosystem, he knows how to read animal tracks and he will tell you the secrets of wildlife...
