Our trail rides in Iceland are, for the longest of them, and in
particular the ones that cross the island from the South to the
North, real expeditions.Crossing vast wild areas on horseback, implies a studied equipment
and a minimum preparation. This page collects the the information
you need to take up this escape, far from the civilization in the
best conditions.
Required equipment
You should be ready for all kinds of weather as the weather can
change very quickly. We recommend that the following items are included
when preparing for our longer tours:
- Riding Boots - preferably rubber, because of the rivers
we cross.
- Warm jacket or overcoat.
- Warm (woollen) sweater.
- Warm socks and gloves, scarf and a cap or hat.
- Warm underwear, long if possible.
- Riding trousers.
- Track suit and a pair of slippers to wear in the mountain
huts.
- (Icelanders take off their shoes when entering a house).
- Swim suit, towels, soap etc.
- A small camera to take with you on the ride.
- Band aids and second skin plasters for chaffing.
- Insect repellent.
- Chocolate or glucose sweets for strenuous riding days.
- Sun lotion for face and lips (with high sun factor).
- Normal street-clothes are not necessary except for your
stay in Reykjavík before or after the tour.
We recommend not to bring too much luggage on the tour. If necessary
extra luggage can be stored at the Guesthouses.
Instructions for use.
Riding gear (riding boots, riding trousers, jackets, hats,
etc.) needs to be washed (40°C), dry cleaned or disinfected
before arriving in Iceland. Certification
is not really a required but beneficial. It is upto the customs
officers in Iceland to check the used riding cloths passengers are bringing
to Iceland.
Be careful : used riding gloves are not allowed in Iceland.
To desinfect your used riding clothes and boots which cannont be washed
in machine or dry cleaned, please follow this step :
- Rinse thoroughly with detergent
- Dry
- Spray with 1% VirkonS® (10g per liter of waster),
- Store for at least 5 days prior to bringing the clothes into contact
with horses in Iceland
Saddles, bridles and other leather gear are strictly prohibited in Iceland
and may not be brought into the country. We remind you that all leather
stuff (like riding boots, chaps etc) which have been in contact with
farm animals (riding center include) still prohibited in Iceland.
Icelandic horses are not vaccinated and are therefore susceptible to
infectious agents from abroad.
At your disposal
You can borrow on the ride :
- Riding helmet
- Saddle bags
- Rain wear
- Sleeping bag (with a sheet)
- Safety helmet
Meals
During the ride full board is provided. Our menu consists of a large
breakfast and traditional Icelandic meals (fish or lamb). Vegetarian meals
are available if requested in advance. All riders make their own packed
lunch from the breakfast table : sandwich, cheese, fruits ...
In Reykjavik/Hafnarfjörður, lunch and dinner are not include but generfruitsally
there are lots of restaurant available near the accomodation.
Alcoholic beverages are not included in the tour price and are hard to get
in the highlands. They can be bought at a reasonable price in the Duty Free
Store at Keflavik Airport upon arrival.
