Erupting volcanoes, tropical forests populated with toucans, parrots, and colored butterflies, immense beaches of the Pacific with an intact wild beauty…moreover 25% of the territory are listed as a natural reserve.
In order to enjoy to the full the richness and the diversity of this small country that would not be satisfied with a ride in a single region, we propose you a very original programme, in which you will be autonomous, with your own 4WD vehicle that you will drive to get to the several bases situated in different ecosystems, that you will discover later on horseback.
It is possible to extend this tour with a stay in a seaside resort, extreme sports extensions (rafting, canyoning…) or other reserves like the one in Tortugero, laying place of the turtles.

ITINERARY
Day 1 : Arrival
Pick up in San Jose airport. Transfer from airport to the hotel in San Jose.
Overnight at the hotel Barcelo Palma Real (four-star hotel) or similar.
Day 2 : San Jose - Alajuela - La Fortuna - Arenal Volcano
Early in the morning, your 4WD will be delivered at hotel reception. Then, you
leave for Alajuela and to the Arenal Volcan area. During your seftdrive tour,
you will discover the Costa Rican landscapes with small roads narrowing in coffee
plantations and mountains. You will reach for lunch your hotel, The Linda Vista
del Norte Hotel (2*) where you will enjoy the exceptionnal location front of
the Arenal Lake, lost in a wild environment. After lunch you will go for your
first horse trail in the National Park of the volcano. You will appreciate a
wide range of tropicals birds... Dinner and overnight at the hotel. (4 hours
ride)
Day 3 : Arenal Volcano
This morning you start at 08:00 am for whole day ride trail in El Castillo, above the lodge. You will picnic in the Margot Ranch. Today you will ride along the Rio Cano Negro, a primary rain forest zone, and along the Arenal Lake. You will climb the Margot Ranch look-out post. (6 hours ride)
In the evening you may go to the Tabacon thermal baths (optionnal extra, the thermal baths close at 10:00 pm).
Day 4 : Arenal Volcano - Rincon de la Vieja Volcano
You leave after breakfast for a 4x4 drive to the Arenal Lake, Tilaran and the Pan-American road, before reaching to the Rincon de la Vieja Volcano on the north of Liberia. During this drive you will be amazed by a total change of vegetation (dry tropical climate) and landscapes. Then you will reach the Guanacaste, the Costarican gaucho territory. Around you there will be horse and zebu breeding... You have a 4 hours drive to get the farme-hotel Hacienda Guachipelin 2*, where your hosts are expecting you for lunch. Before leaving for today's ride, you may plunge in the hacienda swimming pool !
Our 2 hours ride will take place in the National Park of the Rincon de la Vieja Volcano, and you will have the opportunity to discover the Oropendola waterfalls. Dinner and overnight at the hacienda.
Day 5 : Rincon de la Vieja Volcano
After breakfast you leave for an horse riding day in the hacienda estate. You will have the pleasure to cross rivers with horses. You will picnic there. Dinner and overnight at the hacienda. (8-9 hours ride)
Day 6 : Rincon de la Vieja Volcano - Overnight in the farmhouse or front of a north pacific beach (Hermosa)
After the breakfast, you will ride in the estate, you will go to the Chorreras and the Victoria waterfalls. Lunch.
Afternoon free: walk in the National Park, free activities with supplement: mud bath, tyrolean in a canyon.
Or departure to a Pacific beach near Liberia (1h30 hour drive). You choose your lodging for the night between Guachipelin Hacienda and a 2 stars hotel on the beach. Dinner. (1h30-2 hours ride)
Day 7 : Liberia - San Jose
Departure to Liberia, then Central valley and the capital San José
(among 5h30 hours drive). Installation at the Barcelo Palma Real (4*)
hotel or equivalent. Lunch and dinner free.
Restoration of the 4x4 directly to the hotel in the end of the afternoon.
Day 8 : San Jose - your country
After the breakfast, airport transfert. Return flight.
Day 9 : Arrival in your country
Arrival in your country.
EXTEND YOUR TRIP
For a more complete overview of Costa Rica, we suggest you a 4 days / 3 nights travel extension to the pacific coast at Samara. We have selected there a nice 2*+ hotel, in a half board basis. Your car rental will be also extended so that you can easily explore this part of the country. Please contact us for further information.
HORSES AND REQUIRED RIDING LEVEL
Required riding experience
Without great technical difficulties, it is necessary to feel at ease
at the three paces.
This itinerary is entirely customized, it is possible to adapt to the
riding level, allowing more or less outings on horseback, or adapting
the itinerary.
Most of the horses are criollos. There is an Andalusian horse farm, but
generally they are not destined to the trail ride.
The guide is responsible for your safety, therefore he can ask you not
to ride if your riding level is not sufficient for this ride.
For your safety, we recommend always to wear a riding helmet while on
horseback.
YOUR GUIDES
The rides are supervised by local guides.
The original aspect of this programme lies in the "in freedom" programme, in which you drive yourself
your 4x4 to get to the following base of the ride.
Do not forget your driving licence, Mastercard/Visa card. The 4x4 driver must be more than 21. Allowance and guarantee of 750 USD in credit card.
