BRAZIL : HORSEBACK TRAIL RIO AND JUNGLE...

Itinerary - Extensions - Horses and required riding level
Guiding - Accommodation - Dates and rates - More infos / booking

Rio de Janeiro symbolizes Brazil, but the back-country of this famous city offers a wonderful surprise : Mata Alta, the tropical forest which captivated Darwin and was at the origins of his vocation.

Preserved by its inaccessibility, at the heart of the mountains and sugarloafs, you will be riding superb Mangalarga Marchador horses to explore this amazing vegetal tangle, and to discover unique sorts of flora and fauna.

Come and live this equestrian experience in a virgin nature, on this local horse breed, looking like the Peruvian Paso, but which has a supplementary gait : "la marcha".

ITINERARY

Day 1
Arrival in Rio de Janeiro and transfer by car to the horse riding centre, the departure point of the ride (2 hours drive). Meeting with your hosts and settling in your rooms. During the afternoon, you can explore the surrounding nature and get to know the horses. After a typical brazilian dinner, we watch a documentary on Darwin and Brazil, followed by the instructions about the tropical forest: what you need to watch out on the ground, in the undergrowth and in the trees. If we pay enough attention, we may see the same things Darwin saw. Night in a comfortable cottage at the riding centre.

Day 2

After breakfast, we leave towards the mountains with our guide who helps us identify the different animals and plants we observe on our way. We have lunch under an old Jequitiba tree, maybe as ols as Brazil itself, near a waterfall in which we can swim to refresh ourselves. In the afternoon, we follow paths which lead us close to orchids, bromeliaceae (also called "air girls" because most of them live tied to tree branches with strakes) and many butterflies among hundred-year-old trees and an exuberant flora. Dinner and night at the Pousada Lodge.

Day 3
After breakfast, departure for Santa Maria. On our way, we go through Itaperiti valley, enjoying the spectacular views on the mountains and luxuriant forests, with many exotic fruit trees and crossed by many streams. Arriving in Santa Maria Inn, we admire the sunset on the "Três Picos" (the three summits). A sauna or a dive in the river will perk us up from the tiredness of the day before the typical brazilian dinner.

Day 4
This morning, we leave for the ecologic reserve Guapi Assu - Regua. Before entering the Parc "Tres Picos", we go accross the fazenda Joao Paulo then the fazenda Sao Miguel. The itinerary follows the granite wall of the "Serra dos Orgaos", so sheer that it had prevented from the expansion towards the west of Brazil for centuries. To reach the ecological reserve Guapi Assu, we swim accross Guapiassu river with the horses. Lunch at the Guapi Assu Lodge. The afternoon is devoted to the exploration of the reserve, which 6740 hectares shelter an ornithological and wild life reserve. The lodge opens on a huge area of swamp and offers a special view on the beautiful wooded slopes and the altitude forest, and on the "Serra dos Orgaos" mountain chain as well. A paradise to observe birds, animals and wild plants.

Day 5
Dawn is announced by the chirping, songs and cries of many different birds. In saddle again, news paths, hills and valleys offer an eternal spectacle of nature. At noon, we stop at Santa Maria Inn for a hearty lunch. To digest and to stay in shape, in the afternoon we can choose between a walk, tree climbing, or sauna. After dinner, the Santa Maria Inn offers a comfortable bed in the heart of the Brazil of Charles Darwin.

Day 6
To go back to the riding centre, we follow the "Trilha das Tocas" (the paths of the holes) winding through cultivations and livestock farming. Lunch at the fazenda "Das Tocas". Then we go accross Cachoeiras de Macacu city and follow a path leading to "Pedra do Colégo" a place where the Jesuits teached the "golden rule" to natives. We stop for a snack at "Mirante dos Três Picos" (Point of View on the Three Summits), from where we have a nice view on the spectacular mountain range. For dinner, we are back at the riding centre for the last night during which we can share our impressions on this fantastic ride.

Day 7
After a hearty breakfast, it is time to go back to Rio de Janeiro airport and take our flight back to our country.
