SWEDEN : BIG TRAIL FOR SUMMER IN LAPLAND...

Itinerary - Extensions - Horses and required riding level
Guiding - Accommodation - Dates and rates - More infos / booking

Always, we speak about Lapland in winter with its big snowy areas, its reindeers and Santa Claus' house..! But summer it is also an ideal mountainous and wild region. Then, you can see animals when you're riding Islandic horses.

This ride is for you who want to ride up in the mountains with great views, near the nature in an area where very few people are. Mostly we ride in pathless terrain or on small paths so we are mostly riding quiet slowly. This is also for you who do not mind helping out with camping chores and not mind to be without luxury to experience the natural way of being out in the nature. On evening, you enjoy the campfire learning about the Sami nomadic culture and you sleep in a Sami tent.

Finally, this ride will also allow you to live the incredible experience of the midnight sun... shinning almost 24 hours a day. On that way, you can completely take advantage of the landscape, without caring time...

You will be met on arrival at Kiruna airport and transferred to the farm. Diner and overnight at the farm.

Day 2
For our first day, we will be transfered to Nikkaluokta village. After being matched to our horses, we ride west from Nikkaluokta village to Kebnekaise mountain. This is some of the flattest terrain of the entire ride and a good opportunity to try the different paces of the Icelandic horse, including the tölt. Picnic lunch. Return to the horse farm by car . Diner and night.

Day 3 to 5
After having pack horses the first morning, we leave the farm for our ride accros Lapland. The trail takes we east into the mountains, initially along the north bank of the Kalix river. Overnights under Sami tents (lávvu) around campfire and one night in a basic cabin. The evening, we learn about the Sami nomadic culture and legend.

Day 6
For our last day with horses we complete a circular route. We ride down to the valley and come to the farm where we stay for the last night. After basic condition for some days, it is nice to get a shower ! Last dinner together and last night.

Day 7
Breakfast and transfer to Kiruna airport.

Important : some of these tours we ride in the opposite direction because we are riding in a mountain area and sometimes, we have to change the route because of the weather.

YOUR GUIDES

On this trail, our experienced local guides speak perfect English. As they are Sami, they know perfectly well the region and will try to make you discover it and Sami culture under the best conditions. The guides' knowledge of the region allows them to adapt their routes depending on local conditions.

You will carry your personal belongings in saddle bags on your horse and there is a pack horse to carry the food and camp gear, so the pace is not fast.

ACCOMMODATION

Accommodation

During this week you stay 3 nights in a horse farm. The farm is located outside Kiruna with a great view of the mountains and Kalix river, in the little village of Puoltsa. During the tour we will stay 2 nights in a Sami teepee (lávvu) in quite simple, but nice place... Camping facilities are basic. Once you are in the mountains away from the horse farm there are no showers or flush loos. The last night is planed in basic cabin.

Food

We cook together over a fire when we are outdoors. The food is exclusive specialities from this area, for example reindeer meat and fish prepared in a traditional way.

CLIMATE

In Lapland, the climate is dry and continental. Summers are generally short and fresh, but with temperatures being able to rise until 30°C.
As most of Swedish Lapland extend in the North of the polar circle, legendary midnight sun appears of the end of May in mid-July. More we reach the polar circle, more nights are short (not lasting that some short hours) even if they remain very clear.
