| Forget the images of a parched and dried
up land : this is the quintessential Ethiopia of babbling
brooks, yellow flowers and blooming pastures.
The path we used, will take us over hill, along
river, and across plains where everybody goes on foot or
horseback to this day. This has to be some of the most
perfect riding country in the world, similar to the plateaus
of Mongolia in their depth, vastness and ever changing
light. Great plains of grass, full of herds of cattle,
will be the atypical - for a western
eye - Ethiopian landscape to which we’ll set
our hoof beat. We’ll pitch our tents under the Abyssinian
skies and set off at dawn for the ever expanding horizons.
The horses are well accustomed to the altitude - close to 3 000
meters high – and are energetic and brave horses with good
hearts. On the way, we’ll see orthodox churches, and experience
the rhythms and mores of the true Ethiopian countryside with its
inhabitant’s simple
life. The horse, here the most normal form of transport, is the ideal way
to slowly penetrate the aged beauty of a millennia old lifestyle.

ITINERARY
HORSEBACK TRAIL IN THE MENAGESHA SUBA FOREST
Taking
us from our base in Menagesha near Addis Abeba (See map) this ride
encompasses the Montane Forest of Menagesha-Suba, the high plateau
of Shoa and the Blue Nile Gorge. We get to see the typical Abyssinian
lifestyle and camp every night together with farming communities and
witness their lives first hand. Lots of cantering and diverse landscapes.
Day 1 : Europe - Addis Abeba
Flight to Addis Abeba. Diner and night in the plane.
Day 2
Arrival at the airport in the morning. Welcome by our guide and transfer for a half day city-tour. This morning, we will have a large view of the different cultures in Ethiopia thanks to the visit of Addis Abeba Archeological Museum. Then we go to the Mount Entoto which peaks at 3200 meters. It is here, on one of these hills that we will come back few days later on horseback, to enjoy again this beautiful landscape. Our guide drops us off at the hotel after visiting the city. The afternoon is free. Meals are non included. Night at the hotel in Addis Abeba.
Day 3
This morning, we join the equestrian centre with our guide (about 30 minutes from Addis Abeba). After preparing our horses, we begin our first day ride through the Ethiopian highlands. After the picnic, we arrive in the Menagesha Suba forest, situated in the mountains. Tonight, we stay for our first night in the Parc, a pleasant place surrounded by fauna and flora. Night in a refuge, in room or in dormitory.
Day 4
We ride through the forest where live lots of endemic species like the Menelik Bushbuck, the yellow bellied parrot, the forest pig and the leopard. We take the picnic on the way before arriving to the camp in the end of afternoon. Second night at the refuge.
Day 5
This morning, we ride through the highlands, following the direction of the Sélassié church. We discover for the first time the Shoa highlands, who has always been the main area for Ethiopian horse and livestock breeding. We will see them on the market during the day 7. Night at a camp near to a traditional village.
Day 6
During this day, we cross on these fertile lands through narrow streams, meeting lots of herds, away from all Ethiopian stereotypes. On the way, we enjoy the magnificent view on these plains dotted with little villages and churches. We ride on green highlands which allow us to maintain a good pace all day long, with lots of gallops. Second night at the camp.
Day 7
This morning, we go again across the highland to join the typical local market of Kottu. Every Saturday, farmers of all Ethiopia arrive at Kottu to make the market alive. On this market, we can buy horses, donkeys, mules or local products like Punt incence or sandals. Here, we can taste local drinks too: the Tej, or Hydromel. Third night at the camp.
Day 8
We start our last day on horseback through the plains, following the direction of the Solulta stables. On the way, we ride on the Entoto foothills with eucalyptus forests. We arrive in the afternoon, after some last gallops. It is time for our last diner together before our transfer to the airport.
Night in the plane.
