The heart of Istria on horseback - Croatia

ITINERARY

TRAIL ACROSS THE GREEN ISTRIA

Day 1
Welcome to Pula airport in the evening and transfer to our riding base (40 min drive). Arrive to Istria and settle into your accommodations in the village of Karnevali, 3km from medieval market town of Zminj. Dinner and introduction with your host.

Day 2
After a traditional breakfast we go to the stables. Easy riding through open countryside, vineyards and olive groves to a small cave Festinsko Kraljevstvo, followed by a leisurely trek to the medieval town of Savicenta and its Grimani Castle. Return home along the forest trails.

Day 3
Our journey takes us through the Draga (Shallow Valley) which divides Istria into two parts, and in Roman times was the border between two cantons. Halfway along the valley the ghost town of Dvigrad awaits us. Although surrounded by legend we know that the town was abandoned after the plague epidemic in the 16th C. The dominating twin fortresses will be our backdrop for a well-earned picknick. We continue through the valley to return to our farm in Karnevali in the afternoon.

Day 4
Today there will be a short morning ride to the hamlet of Draguzeti, where we shall have time for refreshments and a light lunch. This will be followed by an afternoon excursion to city of Rovinj, better known as the St. Tropez of the Adriatic. Return to Draguzeti for dinner and night.

Day 5
As we ride eastwards into the heart of the Istrian peninsula till the Rasa Valley. We discover new landscapes : forest, fields and villages... It will be the opportunity to gallop, and enjoy the fresh air in the traffic-free surroundings. By late afternoon we will reach the guest house for the night, and this evening we shall enjoy a special meal, traditionally cooked in a ceramic pot under the glowing embers of an open fire.

Day 6
After breakfast, we head to Cerovlje riding across an undulating landscape, dotted with hilltop villages and lonely churches proudly fighting the forces of time.  By lunchtime we shall reach the once-fortified town of Beram where we will have a typical Istrian lunch, and see the famous 15th century frescoes in a little chapel. In the late afternoon we shall reach Rafo’s ranch where we stay for this night or return to Karnevali (30 min drive). Diner and overnight. If you want, we propose a short evening visit to the medieval wity of Motovun is possible.

Day 7
This morning we will go through the charming countryside, alongside ancient stone walls, to reach the middle-age town of St. Peter. Picnic lunch. We continue through fields and small vineyards to get the stables. We spend the last night in Karnevali and enjoy a farewell dinner.

Day 8
Breakfast and so long ! Transfert back to Pula airport in the morning.
